Yes, we come to this plane and others to learn lessons. Our eternal lives are filled with growing spiritually and learning lesson.

You asked, "Do we evolve each visit spiritually ie do we become better souls or can we regress?"

We can never regress. We always learn more and become more spiritually mature.

However, remember that we are much more than the minds or spirits we see on the Earth plane. When we experience an incarnation onto a plane, such as the Earth plane, we use only some of our eternal or higher selves. We are much more than that. We have all of the accumulations of all of our lives and much more knowledge and understanding based on them. It is as though we were playing out a hand we were dealt in this life, but the entire deck of cards is who we are in eternity. And so we do incarnate to learn lessons, but all of the lessons of all our lives are in the greater, higher self. Who we are on the Earth plane and what we learn are just a part of who we are in eternity.
